Saturday Super Clean-Up in Home Park
This Saturday will be
the Home Park Super Clean Up. It starts at 8 am. with a kickoff in the
basement of the 10th Street United Methodist Church to go over
logistics including assigned streets, safety issues, bathroom
locations, dumpster location, etc.
Donuts and coffee will be
provided. Pizza will be provided at lunchtime (noon). Drinks will be
provided by Coca Cola and Target.
The primary areas to be cleaned will be:
* Ethel St between Hemphill and Snyder
* McMillan St between Calhoun St to Ethel
* Terrell St between Calhoun St to Ethel
* Curran St between 10th St to Ethel
* Hampton St between 10th St to Ethel
If
enough volunteers show up, the plan is to expand the targeted area
quite a bit to where we might get most of Home Park south of 14th
Street cleaned up. So, the more the merrier and cleaner!
Although
the Midtown Alliance and other organizations will be providing some
equipment and garbage bags, it is highly recommended that you wear
gloves; and best if you do not wear sneakers. Wear shoes that provide a
little more protection. If you have rakes, shovels, grass/branch
clippers, or anything that you think would be helpful in the cleanup,
please bring them for your use.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Please plan
on joining us this Saturday. We will have lots of people helping out
with this cleanup including GT President Dr. Peterson, Major Williams
-our Zone 5 precinct commander, Officer Stevens (Home Park's APD
officer) and several other APD officers, Senator Vincent Fort,
Councilmen Hall and Young, City Hall employees, 4 GT student groups, 2
GT alumni groups, several members from Midtown Alliance, the Department
of Corrections, and several middle schoolers, to name a few. If all
these people are willing to take time off on their weekend to come to
our neighborhood to help clean it up, it sure would be nice to have as
many Home Park residents/property owners participating as possible.
It's your 'hood after all. And it will be fun. You can solve a lot of
the world's problems while walking alongside a neighbor picking up
trash or raking up leaves.
The agenda is going to be passed out
at the kickoff tomorrow morning. Assignments will be made then
depending on who is initially there. It will fluctuate during the day
depending on how much progress is made. The folks who are there at 8 am
will concentrate on those areas that I outlined earlier, including
Hemphill between 10th and 14th. Our hope is that most of that area is
completed so that we can cover more of the neighborhood after lunch.
Lunch will be from noon to 1pm. Pizza will be provided.
Throughout
the day, and especially at lunch, assessments will be made on where to
go as the initial areas are cleaned up. The folks organizing this will
be in contact with each other throughout the day. Additionally, Midtown
Alliance vehicles and GT police cars will be sweeping the neighborhood
shuttling people, tools, equipment, etc to everyone and they'll be able
to stay on top of what parts we cover next.
So, if you cannot
attend the 8 am kickoff, then go to the church basement when you're
ready to start and get your assignment there. Nelson Burke will be
manning the station and will be able to direct you to where we need
coverage.
According to the Weather Channel, it will be
overcast tomorrow and cool: 41 degrees at 9 am, with a high of 52
degrees at 5 pm. Dress warm or in layers.
Bring gloves!
There will be one large dumpster. It's scheduled to be placed on McMillan Street.
